Personal Excellence Awards

Presented to IT professionals for demonstrating excellence in their field.

We are looking to recognise the individuals among the UK IT community who have demonstrated excellence in their profession during the past 12 months. The awards seek to reward individuals at all levels of an organisation who have contributed to the development and deployment of innovative IT systems that improve business operations or enhance public services. Entries can be submitted by IT vendors nominating their customers or employees, from companies/public bodies, or individuals wishing to recognise either their own or their colleagues' efforts.

 

The awards in this category will be judged against four key criteria:

 

Professionalism: has consistently met or exceeded challenging objectives to ensure the successful use of IT, and demonstrated a quality approach through personal values and working practices.

Innovation: has used innovative approaches, working practices or technologies to enhance their organisation.

Role model: has provided an example to peers or colleagues of the importance of the role of IT in an organisation and the standards expected of IT professionals.

Measurable success: has delivered quantifiable benefits to their organisation through involvement with IT initiatives in the past year and can demonstrate personal development to enhance their ability to succeed in future.

 

It should be noted that SFIA is used by the BCS as a reference for skills assessment.

Entrants should provide a maximum 500-word explanation for how they meet each of these four criteria, plus a maximum 250-word summary of why they believe they should win this award.

Each entry, therefore, requires five sections detailing achievements against each of the four criteria above (up to 500 words each), plus the summary of success statement (250 words). There is also an 80 word overview of application which will be used for publicity purposes.

Categories

Business Analyst of the Year 

Awarded to an individual responsible for the definition of requirements and solutions for improving business processes and systems, reducing their costs, enhancing their sustainability, and quantifying potential business benefits. They may also conduct methodical investigation, analysis, review and documentation of business functions and processes.

CIO of the Year 

Awarded to a CIO, IT director or other board-level IT executive. The winner will be an individual who has consistently demonstrated excellence in leadership, innovation and quality in the use and promotion of IT in their organisation to deliver business growth or delivery of public services. The size of the organisation is immaterial.

IT Apprentice of the Year 

Awarded to an individual who is participating in an IT apprenticeship programme that involves part-time formal study to gain IT qualifications, together with paid work experience to enhance skill and understanding. The apprenticeship must be on-going in March 2017.

IT Manager of the Year 

Awarded to an individual responsible for any aspect of IT delivery but especially roles in areas such as Business Analysis, Security & Governance, project/programme management or Consultancy. They will have delivered tangible benefit to their organisation, meeting key objectives for budget, timescales and service.

IT Service & Support Professional of the Year 

Awarded to an individual providing IT service, support or training to users of IT systems, who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and commitment, meeting key objectives for quality, customer satisfaction and delivery of agreed service levels. This category covers areas such as training, help desk, information content development or project support. The award is open to all staff - not just senior management - to ensure the full range of IT skills is recognised.

Young IT Professional of the Year 

Awarded to an IT professional under the age of 30, or who turns 30 in 2017, in any discipline, who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and achievement in their work, and through their quality and professionalism stands out in their organisation as a high performer in the application and management of IT. Credit will be given for high achievement early in the career, but those in an apprentice programme should enter the "IT Apprentice" category.



Technology Excellence Awards

 

Presented for innovative new hardware or software products, or generally-available IT services, which make the biggest contribution to business technology or to IT in general. Entries can be submitted by IT vendors nominating their customers or themselves, from companies/public bodies or individuals wishing to recognise their own organisations' efforts.

A product or innovation is classified as an application, service, device, or technology which is widely available; normally (but not necessarily) for a monthly or one-off charge. Bespoke projects can be entered as long as they use a technology which can be easily extended to other customers. Free Internet consumer services and mobile apps are eligible.

We are looking to recognize achievement in the development, sales and implementation of new technologies released during the past 12 months that have a substantial base in the UK, or where the product or service is marketed within the UK.

There is also a special category for innovative products from organizations whose headquarters and development capability is in the UK.

 

The awards in this section will be judged against four key criteria. The appropriate section of the entry form must be completed for each one.

 

Innovation: has the product introduced new or leading-edge technologies, created different ways of working, or novel approaches that benefit its users?

Measurable success: can the team demonstrate significant commercial success for the product during the past 12 months?

Customer satisfaction: is there evidence of customers using the product successfully to improve their operations and that they would recommend the product to others?

Degree to which product support is carried out in the UK: Whilst non-UK products are not precluded, the degree to which the entry is developed, managed and supported in the UK is an important factor for the UK IT Industry Awards.

Specific to the UK innovation and entrepreneurship award only: the product or service should be developed or managed entirely in the UK by a startup organisation, or a small autonomous team within a larger organisation, using the expertise of UK IT professionals. Include the size of the team, and where it works, in the "Summary" section of the entry form.

 

Entrants should provide a maximum 500-word explanation for how they meet each of these four criteria, plus a maximum 250-word summary of why they believe their product or service should win this award.

Each entry, therefore, requires four sections detailing achievements against each of the four criteria above (up to 500 words each), plus the summary statement (up to 250 words), which should include where the product is developed and marketed. A product overview should also be included. Credit is given for each section, so all sections of the form must be completed.

 

Categories

Presented for innovative new hardware or software products, or generally-available IT services, which make the biggest contribution to business technology or to IT in general.

Business IT Innovation of the Year 

Awarded to an innovative new product or service that has delivered measurable benefit for business users or customers in areas such as, e-commerce, hosting, web performance, communications, or web-based services.

Cloud Innovation Provider of the Year 

Awarded to a product or service that has delivered measurable benefit to end users in either a single, large organisation or for a variety of organisations through any mix of private or public cloud offerings.

Security Innovation of the Year 

Awarded to an innovative new product or service that has delivered measurable benefit for customers in areas such as IT security, data protection, information management, risk management, business continuity, or disaster recovery.

Infrastructure Innovation of the Year 

Awarded to an innovative new product or service that has delivered measurable benefit for customers in areas such as data centres, networking, systems management, server hardware and software, storage, application development, IT support or other business infrastructure applications.

Mobile App of the Year 

Awarded to mobile apps that run on mobile phones, tablets or W8 or other touchscreen devices or other devices with built-in 3G or 4G capability. These apps should show an innovative use of the technology on the device, and possibly of on-line services.

UK Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award 

Awarded to a new product or service that has delivered measurable benefit for customers, can demonstrate the potential to be an important product for customers worldwide, and has been developed by a small team in the UK. The aim of this award is specifically to recognize innovation and achievement in IT product or service development in the UK. This can be either by a startup organization, or a small autonomous team within a larger organization.



Organisational Excellence Awards

 

Presented for the delivery of IT excellence and customer satisfaction.

 

We are looking to recognise the organisations that have demonstrated excellence in their industry during the past 12 months. The awards seek to reward organisations who have contributed to the development and deployment of innovative IT systems that improve business operations or enhance public services. Entries can be submitted by IT vendors nominating their customers or themselves, from companies/public bodies or individuals wishing to recognise their own organisations' efforts. IT vendors nominating their customers should ensure that they have the necessary consent and ideally a customer representative as part of the presentation team.

 

The awards in this category will be judged against four key criteria:

 

Professionalism: Consistently meeting or exceeding challenging objectives to ensure the successful use of IT and demonstrating a quality approach through organisational values and working practices.

Excellence: Evidence of meeting or exceeding the requirements and expectations of internal and/or external customers - whether "customers" means clients, end-users or employees.

Innovation: Used innovative approaches or technologies to enhance the organisation.

Measurable success: Able to demonstrate quantifiable performance improvements for the organisation through the achievement of key objectives and successful delivery of IT systems.

 

Entrants should provide:

A maximum 500-word explanation for how they meet each of the four criteria, plus a maximum 250-word summary of why they believe they should win this award.

Each entry, therefore, requires:

  • Organisational overview (80 words), which can be used for PR purposes
  • Four sections detailing achievements against each of the four criteria above (up to 500 words each)
  • A summary statement (up to 250 words)

All sections of the form must be completed

 

Categories

Best Place to Work in IT 2017 

Awarded to the organisation that provides the best employment and career opportunities for IT professionals. The winner will be an organisation that its IT employees view as a great place to work; that values the role of IT and the professionalism of the staff that provide and support it, offering career and skills development, reward and recognition for personal achievement and industry-leading employment benefits.

IT Project Team of the Year 

Awarded to an outstanding project team that has implemented an end-user project that has been exceptionally well-managed. The winning team will demonstrate against the four criteria how well the project has been run and what lessons have been learnt, how customer expectations have been surpassed, innovation introduced by the project and measurable outcomes for the project.

IT Team of the Year 

Awarded to the company or public body that demonstrates how the development or implementation of its IT strategy has helped to meet objectives, achieve greater competitiveness or improve public services during the past 12 months. The winning organisation will show how IT is fundamental to achieving business goals.

Services Company of the Year 

Awarded to recognise excellence in the provision of IT systems, the winner will be a supplier of hardware, software and/or IT services that has achieved significant business success in the past 12 months, and can demonstrate high levels of customer satisfaction and business benefits from the users of its products and services.

Small Supplier or VAR of the Year 

Awarded to recognise excellence in the provision of IT systems by a VAR, the winner will be a supplier of hardware, software and/or IT services that has achieved significant business success in the past 12 months, and can demonstrate high levels of customer satisfaction and business benefits from the users of its products and services.


 

Project Excellence Awards

Presented to organisations and/or project teams which have achieved exceptional results through an outstanding project implementation and in so doing demonstrated high levels of professionalism in IT.

We are looking for submissions of end-user projects that highlight the importance of new technology initiatives and demonstrate the benefits of well-managed IT implementations for changing and improving business and public life. Projects should have been completed after 1st March 2016, and have had a significant UK-based element. IT suppliers may enter these
categories for a nominated customer project, but should be aware that the award is given to the organisation within which the project has been implemented.

Hardware vendors and software authors may submit an internal project to develop new products (i.e. where they are themselves the 'end-user') but it is emphasized that the assessment will be made solely on the characteristics of the build project and not on the product developed.

More than one project may be submitted by an applicant as separate entries, and a given project may be submitted into more than one category.

The awards in this section will be judged against four key criteria:

Innovation: Has the project introduced new or leading-edge technologies, supported a new way of working or pioneered an original change in business processes? Has the project stimulated new thinking, or laid the foundations for further innovation?

Return on Investment: Has the project measurably and substantially improved the organisation's ability to achieve its core goals? Has it bestowed a significant competitive advantage, or dramatically enhanced the services offered to customers, staff or partners? Have there been spin-off benefits of the project?

Quality of management: Was the project completed on time and within budget? Did the project deliverables match or exceed the initial objectives? Were obstacles overcome with a combination of ingenuity and adherence to the principal aims of the project? What lessons were learned to improve the management of future projects?
Impact: What measures have been used to assess or quantify the success of the project? How has the project demonstrated technology's role as a vital enabler in improving organisational excellence, competitiveness or quality of service? How will the project's deliverables be developed, or how will they support future growth or change in the organisation?

 

The judges will consider each these criteria, and each submitted project should be able to clearly demonstrate, where relevant, affirmative responses to them, and in particular show underlying characteristics of distinctive excellence, creativity and benefit to the organisation and/or its clients.

 

Entrants should provide:

An explanation for how the submitted project meets each of the four criteria, plus a maximum 250-word summary of why they believe they should win this award.

Each entry, therefore, requires:

  • Project overview (80 words), which can be used for PR purposes
  • Four sections detailing achievements (up to 500 words each) against each of the four criteria above
  • A summary statement (up to 250 words) 

 

Entrants are urged to ensure that their submissions follow the above format so that the judges are able to give the entry their fullest consideration. Within the bounds of commercial confidence, entrants should seek to provide quantitative evidence (including, at the instance of the applicant, limited amounts of ancillary materials) wherever appropriate to support the submission.

Categories:

Best IoT Project of the Year 

Awarded to a public or private sector entrant for the most outstanding project developing 'Internet of Things' technologies and/or usage. Note that the determination will be made on the project to develop or deploy, and not for the technology per se.

Best 'Not for Profit' Sector IT Project 

Awarded to a 'not for profit' sector organisation for the most outstanding project. For clarity, the award is open to charities, NGO's and government departments, but is subject always to the accepted criteria on surplus distribution. The award is not limited to any specific type of project, as long as it uses IT to benefit the organisation or its clients. The judges may take into account, where relevant, the size of the organisation when making their determination.

Best Use of Cloud Services 

Awarded to a public or private sector entrant for the most outstanding IT project implementing services or applications based on IaaS, PaaS or SaaS.

Big Data / Analytics Project of the Year 

Awarded to a public or private sector entrant for the most outstanding IT project related to the management and use of 'Big Data' and in particular to the associated analytical capabilities to deliver real value in terms of organisational performance.

Cybersecurity Project of the Year 

Awarded to the security team that has delivered the highest level of excellence in a cybersecurity project for their organization or clients. Nominees will be measured against how they can demonstrate this excellence against the four criteria, and the real world improvement and transformation it made to the organization it was delivered to.

Digital Project of the Year 

Awarded to a public or private sector entrant for the most outstanding digital media project (including those which leverage the use of social media) to remodel market reach, client relations and brand recognition as well as projects where the rationale is the distribution or management of content itself.

Workplace Transformation Project of the Year 

Awarded to a public or private sector entrant for the most outstanding IT project implementing or using enterprise mobility and collaborative technologies (including those which embrace partners and clients) to transform the workplace with device and location independent services.

 

Vendor of the Year


Open to all vendors, this standalone award will go to the vendor who can demonstrate outstanding performance in terms of market penetration, revenue growth, customer feedback and the launch of innovative new products. Crucially, the vendor must clearly demonstrate a commitment to workplace diversity as well as IT excellence. They will have set up schemes to encourage and promote equality amongst staff, with opportunities provided to the most talented individuals regardless of their personal attributes or beliefs. The organisation will be able to demonstrate a solid record of both innovation (whether that's in their products, working practises or processes) and investment in the UK IT industry. Evidence of youth training and recruitment programmes, and charitable works will also be considered.

The awards in this category will be judged against four key criteria:

 

Excellence: Consistently able to demonstrate leading performance in terms of market penetration, revenue growth, product launches and/or customer satisfaction.

Diversity: Encouraging and promoting diversity of all kinds in the workplace, both in terms of recruitment practises, and staff opportunities, training and retention policies.

Innovation: Demonstrating a true commitment to innovation, with the aim of providing the latest technology and services to customers, creating new products or even new marketplaces, and / or creating new routes to market and fresh ways to engage and communicate with the IT community.

Investment:
Able to give strong evidence of investment in the UK, whether that's in terms of new hires, investment in research and development, opening new facilities and / or charitable works and donations. At its root an answer to the question: what have you done to make the UK a better place to live and work in?
